How long water damage restoration takes

The machines are usually in the house for three days or more: that is Fixr's figure, and Bob Vila says about 72 hours for most rooms. The full job, from the morning you found the water to the day the baseboards go back on, is measured in weeks, and much of it is spent waiting on someone else.

Drying figures from Fixr and Bob Vila. The later phases vary too widely for one honest number.

Our air works against drying

A dehumidifier pulls water out of the air, and the air pulls it out of the drywall and studs. That only works if the air can take more. Through a Bellingham December the outside air is chilly and close to saturated, with about 20 days of measurable rain at the airport in the average month. So crews keep the house closed and heated and let the machines run, then wait on the meter. Expect original wood floors and plaster walls in Fairhaven and the Lettered Streets to take longer than a 1990s house with drywall.

Flood weeks are slow for everyone

When the Nooksack leaves its banks, every restoration company and adjuster in the county gets busy in the same week. November 2021 alone produced 326 federal flood insurance claims in Whatcom County, most of them in a few small valley towns. Plan for delays at each step. Keep the drying going while you wait for an inspection, photograph it, and don't let a soaked house sit because the paperwork is behind.

Ways to shorten it

  • Shut off the water and make the call on the day it happens.
  • Let wet pad and saturated drywall come out early so the cavities behind them can breathe.
  • Have the plumber write down what failed, and keep the photos ready for the adjuster.
  • Use one company for drying and rebuild, or agree on the handoff date up front.

Questions Whatcom County homeowners ask

How long does water restoration take?

Fixr says drying takes three days or more, and Bob Vila says about 72 hours for most spaces. Putting the house back together adds weeks, sometimes months, depending on how much was torn out. The adjuster's schedule and backordered materials stretch it further.

How long do drying fans stay?

Until the readings in the wet material match the dry target, which Fixr says is three days or longer on most jobs. A copy of the daily log lets you watch the numbers fall.

Can I start the repairs before the adjuster comes?

Go ahead with drying and anything that stops the damage from spreading, and photograph it all. Wait on rebuilding until the adjuster has inspected or told you in writing to proceed.
